Issued by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) earlier this year, the new rules prohibit medical providers involved in the $286 million program from referring patients for abortion services. The only exceptions are cases of rape, incest or medical emergency. The changes, referred to by abortion rights activists as a “gag rule,” resulted in several providers giving up the federal funds. Planned Parenthood and at least six state health departments (in Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Oregon, Vermont and Washington) announced this summer they were exiting Title X....

The poll results mark a rare consensus across party lines about Russia’s threat amid continuing tensions with the U.S. David Sterrett, a senior research scientist at the AP-NORC Center, said that it’s “pretty uncommon” to see large majorities of both Republicans and Democrats view certain issues as a problem. More Democrats than Republicans said they considered Russia’s government a big threat, 79 percent to 70 percent. The difference may be attributable to former President Donald Trump’s efforts to downplay aggression from Russia, according to the AP....

The new survey, published Monday and conducted by the Detroit Regional Chamber, found that 57 percent of respondents approved of Whitmer’s coronavirus response in Michigan, while just 37 percent disapproved. Meanwhile, only 44 percent of those polled approved of President Donald Trump’s response to the crisis, while 50 percent disapproved. Among those surveyed, 39 percent self-identified as Democrats, while 35 percent identified as Republicans and 26 percent said they were independents....

California is the second state, after Vermont, to prohibit residents from tossing food scraps into the trash. Organic waste in landfills emits 20% of the state’s methane, a pollutant 84 times more potent than carbon dioxide, according to the California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery. Lawmakers hope this new mandate will cut down on the pollutants that contribute to the climate crises Californians experience firsthand.
