The Mafia Trilogy consists of Definitive Editions of the first three Mafia games, with the Mafia 2 and 3 upgrades available now along with all of their DLC. The Mafia 1 remake includes a brand new game engine, new cut-scenes, new gameplay, and more enhancements. This obviously requires a lot more work than Mafia 2 and 3, which explains why fans will have to wait until later this summer to try the Mafia 1 remake.

While Mafia 2 and 3 aren’t getting quite the same level of treatment as Mafia 1, they are still getting upgrades. The games are getting “ultra HD remasters” that support 4K visuals, so the Mafia Trilogy versions should make the games look better than ever before. Fans can purchase each game separately or together, and those who already own Mafia 2 on Steam will get the upgraded version of free. Those that own Mafia 3 on PS4, Steam, or Xbox One will also enjoy a free upgrade.
If the Mafia Trilogy is successful, one has to imagine that it could potentially lead to 2K games pursuing Mafia 4. A trademark leaked last year indicating that Mafia 4 was indeed a distinct possibility, but nothing official has been announced. Combine that trademark with Mafia 3’s sales success, and it seems like Mafia 4 would be a no-brainer.
However, it’s worth pointing out that Mafia studio Hangar 13 was hit with layoffs in 2018 that saw the company lose a huge portion of its staff. It’s unclear why these layoffs occurred, but Hangar 13’s reduced size could be why it’s creating Mafia Trilogy instead of a brand new game from the ground-up. Maybe 2K Games has instead entrusted the Mafia IP to a different studio, though that remains to be seen.
For now, those interested can check out Mafia 2: Definitive Edition as well as Mafia 3: Definitive Edition, potentially at no extra cost. Those more interested in the Mafia 1 remake will have to wait until this summer to get their hands on the game.
Mafia Trilogy launches on August 28 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
