That being said, it seems the team over at Hangar 13 think the re-imagining of Tommy Angelo’s crime saga needs a little longer in the oven than expected, with the studio announcing on Twitter the decision to push the game back by a few weeks. Now, Mafia: Definitive Edition will be available on September 25.

“Though we’d originally planned to release the game one month earlier on August 28, finalizing everything in time for that launch date has become increasingly challenging due to the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic,” Hangar 13 claims in a statement on the official Mafia website. “From the beginning, this has been a passion project for us. Many of our developers helped create the original Mafia, and all of us are committed to crafting an updated experience worthy of that timeless classic.” The statement goes on to continue fans for their “patience and understanding.”
Yet, the team clearly didn’t want to leave fans empty-handed, announcing that players will get to see exactly why the game’s worth the wait when the team airs the remake’s gameplay premiere on July 22. In preparation for the event, there’s a 15-second teaser on Mafia’s Twitter that players can go watch right now. The teaser highlights a small sample of gameplay, including driving through rain-drenched 1930s streets, Tommy Angelo walking through an ominous lightning storm, and a few more of the remake’s absolutely stunning cut-scenes. There’s no denying that the full event will be one to watch when it premieres in a few weeks’ time.
Of course, Mafia: Definitive Edition isn’t the only remake launching this year. Destroy All Humans! will finally hit shelves later this month, bringing the chaotic gameplay of the PlayStation 2 classic to modern consoles, while Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 + 2 will finally relaunch the iconic skating franchise this September. Evidently Mafia will have a lot of competition from its peers, however, the amount of effort, time, and passion that’s gone into this re-imagining of Tommy Angelo’s story makes it seems like it’s unlikely to disappoint.
Mafia: Definitive Edition will be available on September 25 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
