The Doof Warrior, the blind guitarist that leads Immortan Joe’s War Boys into battle, tested so badly that Warner Bros. wanted to pull the plug on his appearance. In an interview with New York Times reporter Kyle Buchanan, director George Miller said that test audiences only got to see the character with a temporary soundtrack and didn’t really take to him. “Whenever the Doof Warrior played in the test screening, it was the same riff, so it got annoying,” the director said.

Miller stuck by the character and the studio ultimately relented after Junkie XL was brought in to give the scene some proper backing music. Interestingly, the double-neck guitar played by the Doof Warrior is actually a functioning instrument and can even spew flames as seen in the movie.
Originally, the device was just a prop, but after Miller said he wanted to hear what it sounded like, production designer Colin Gibson scrambled to get it working. Thankfully, a member of Gibson’s team knew enough about guitar tech to fix it up so it could be played. “He became one of the most popular characters in the film,” Miller added.
The Australian director has a few follow-ups planned for Mad Max: Fury Road, with two direct sequels and a Furiosa spinoff in the works.
