Although the Mad Max franchise seems as though it has been around for nearly forever, it really started to pick up and draw attention with the release of the sequel, Mad Max: Fury Road. The sequel ushered in some of the most positive reviews that the franchise has seen to date. Not to mention, Fury Road was a huge hit at the box office, earning over $375 million against a production budget of around $185 million. Ever since the grand introduction of Tom Hardy’s Max and Charlize Theron’s Furiosa, fans have been desperate for the two to make the ultimate return to the cryptic wasteland of Mad Max: Fury Road.

The announcement that there would be a sequel to the film arrived quite quickly after the release of Mad Max: Fury Road. Miller at the time revealed to fans his working title for the succeeding film, Mad Max: The Wasteland, and confirmed that he had mostly finished the entire script already. Unfortunately, since Miller’s announcement, any updates or news regarding the film’s progress has been nearly impossible to find. Finally, a new report from Variety has provided an update on Mad Max 5: The Wasteland.
After a series of delays due to a legal dispute involving Miller and Warner Bros, a lot of fans have been worried that they might not ever see Mad Max 5: The Wasteland come to life. With this new update, it still doesn’t seem likely that the film will be arriving any time soon. Yet, the film is most certainly still in the works and not canceled in the least bit. Miller stated briefly, “We do have another story, but it’s still not fully evolved. We’ll see further down the chain.”
Mad Max 5 still has no release window in sight. It’s also still up in the air as to whether Hardy will be reprising his iconic role. From Miller’s comments alone, it doesn’t seem to be a promising indicator that Mad Max 5 is anywhere close to being finished. Rather, it seems as though Miller and the rest of his creative team are still figuring out the foundation of what story they want to tell and how it will go on to impact the rest of the franchise as a whole. However, fans shouldn’t fret because, eventually, Mad Max 5 will make its long-awaited debut in theaters.
